Hi, I am Eva Merendes, a Greek, London-based visual artist, art tutor and art workshop facilitator with a background in psychology and art psychotherapy. I work in a variety of mediums with a sweet spot for watercolours and the qualities this medium offers. I primarily create works on paper and wood panels, and I also make sculpture installations.
My work, two-dimensional or three-dimensional, celebrates life’s absurdities, drawing from existentialist and stoic philosophies. Through absurd, everyday, and comical expressions, I aim to challenge conventional notions of meaning, inviting viewers to critically reflect on the inherent absurdity in our quest for purpose.
My art practice is an effort to alleviate the anxieties inherent in my nature and to scratch that curious itch that constantly tries to make sense of my existence. This curiosity takes me to a creative place, where I find inspiration in the poetry and humour of everyday human experiences. I delve into primal relationships in order to achieve a sense of individuality and freedom through my work.
The use of symbols in my artworks becomes a metaphor for the struggles, resilience, authenticity, fearlessness, and the mundaneness of the human condition. My work is an ode to the paradoxical nature of life and a prompt for people to find liberation by embracing their authentic selves amidst the absurdity of this world.
